Does anyone else come up with things like history, uses, and stuff for their Selective Breeds? Like how real breeds originate for certain uses in parts of the world?
I've come up with a bunch for some of my breeds but I always change my mine and delete what I've written because it sucks lol. But I still can't help but think about what the breed's use or history would be in real life.
I'm a writer, though, so maybe it's a compulsion. Speaking of, I am thinking about using my Selective Breeds in the place of real life breeds for some of my stories that take place in other worlds. Like clearly a Scottish Terrier wouldn't be called that in a world that Scotland doesn't exist lol.

I've really been meaning to do this for mine. I also write (if mostly fanfics lol) and it is so much fun to do that kind of worldbuilding! Admittedly, some of mine (finished and in-progress) are based on real breeds, so can't do much there. But the made up ones? Free rein! Right now I'm working on one I'm calling a "Lion Hound" that I imagine has the backstory of being breed as a hunting companion and guard dog, and I haven't come up with much for the Highlights yet, but I definitely will!
Also as a writer, I can promise that what you write is probably really fun to read even if it seems bad to you! I struggle with the same, but then when I actually post something and get a good review or two, it helps snap me out of it a bit. I love your breedz and am definitely curious!
And the point about using them in fantasy worlds is GENIUS. Since I mostly do fanfics, I work with worlds with pre-established animals and such, but sometimes that isn't defined even though the world is clearly not our earth. In that case, it would make so much sense to have different breeds because the world has a different history, and therefore had different needs in work/companion animals. Especially if the existing breed, as you said, is named after a place that likely (or definitely) doesn't exist in that world! Just an excellent idea all around!

I promise, some of the ideas I had for a few of my breeds were bad rofl. My Cottontail Cat, a very very fluffy friendly breed, was originally supposedly from a group of feral barn cats and just... yikes! Not really sure what I was thinking then. I came up with it a few years back. I'm giving a LOT more thought into my breeds' history now before I share anything lol.
Oh, goodness, I'm excited to see a Lion Hound! That sounds awesome!
I don't typically write stories that take place in other worlds because worldbuilding is NOT my forte lol. But given the nature of my recent series, I kinda have to let some stories take place in worlds not very similar to ours. Not looking forward to it, but at least I'll have my Selective Breeds I can turn to for inspiration.

I recall that bit of Cottontail lore! It still catches me off-guard that it's the only one without Rogue in its name. I get what you mean about the history when one thinks about it; feral cats tend to have greater genetic diversity rather than less (source: LOTS of barn cats around my place. One day the whole family was waken up by a pair screaming at each other in the highway? That was weird, but I digress!). I still love the breed, though, and I can tell you that the one I adopted is doing just fine, much as he had trouble getting along with the others kits I introduced him to!
Cat breeds are a bit of a problem, anyway, since I was reading that diverse selective breeding really only started recently. Dogs had to be specialized for lots of different jobs, so you get a lot of variety. Cats... basically just had to catch mice. There seem to be a few exceptions, like the vocal Siamese being early warning systems for owners, but very few breeds are gonna be these super special exceptions, so what can you do, right?
Having real trouble with the Lion Hounds. I want a Jack Russel head but Lab ears, and separating the two is a TRIAL so far. Nevermind that I got a line that will translate well to a St. Bernard... if only I can breed a Sheepie tail on. This one... might take a while, hah. But using P5 breeds like the JR and the Papillion has resulted in some interesting discovers about the traits they can pass down, so can't complain too much! I'll post some pics of how it's coming along on the breeding threads!
I've always loved stories that take place in other worlds, so I at least have plenty of books I reread that I can analyze for what details help with worldbuilding, but figuring it out and then actually doing it are two different things! I'm not sure whether it's harder or easier, honestly, than having to stick consistently to an established world in fanfics - writing just isn't easy however you do it! Unless you count the really bad Self-Insert Warriors fics I wrote when I was like 12. Those were easy. Also horribly bad. But hey, easy!
